Bio
Harriet M. Perry is the retired Director of the Center for Fisheries Research and Development, Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL), The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) and a former member of the faculty of the Department of Coastal Sciences. She began working at the GCRL in 1968 and has conducted research on zooplankton communities, blue crab recruitment, population dynamics of various marine/estuarine species, fishery development, invasive species, and blue crab aquaculture. She is well published in peer-reviewed journals and has maintained a continuous record of funding over her career. While director, she was a member of the Special Scientific Committee on Stone Crabs, Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council; Crab Subcommittee, Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission; SEAMAP Plankton Workgroup; Gulf and South Atlantic Regional Panel on Invasive Species, and the Mississippi Crab Taskforce. Three of the programs she has worked on received Gulf Guardian Awards: The Alabama/Mississippi Rapid Assessment Program and the Gulf of Mexico Regional Program to remove derelict and abandoned crab traps from Gulf waters (2004 and 2017). She received the University’s Distinguished Service award and was honored by the Mississippi Chapter of the American Fisheries Society and the Gulf States Marine fisheries Commission for distinguished service. She is now Professor Emeritus and is currently working in the Center for Fisheries Research and Development as a senior research scientist.
